Jack Russell Terrier Earrings: Woody

When Jennie, who lives in the USA, got in touch about having some jewellery made to celebrate her Jack Russell Terrier, Woody, she knew exactly what she wanted.

Not a memorial piece. Not something to keep for later. She wanted to celebrate Woody now, while he was still very much by her side.

Jennie told me, “My Woody and I have a very special connection. I want to celebrate that while I still have him.”

And I completely understood what she meant. We all know that our dogs aren't going to be with us forever. It's one of the hardest things about loving them so much. But sometimes, instead of waiting until we're forced to make something to remember them by, there's something really lovely about celebrating the relationship while we're still making memories together.

Jennie asked me to make a pair of silver drop earrings that looked like Woody, and she sent me photographs so I could pick out the details that made him unmistakably himself.

Woody has a lovely wiry coat, giving him that classic scruffy Jack Russell character, but it was his markings that really mattered.

There was a little brown marking around his right eye, along with all those lovely brown spots across his ears. Those were the details Jennie wanted me to notice, because she knows Woody better than anyone.

So that's exactly what I did. I made the earrings from silver, carefully shaping each little Woody so that his face and scruffy character came through. Then I added rose gold to recreate his brown markings, including that tiny patch around his right eye and the spots on his ears.

It's amazing how a tiny amount of colour in just the right place can completely change a piece of jewellery.

“My Woody and I have a very special connection. I want to celebrate that while I still have him.”

It's not about making a generic dog shape. It's about noticing the things that make that particular dog special.

Jennie's words have stayed with me because I think she's absolutely right. “We only have them for a short time, so let's celebrate them while we can.”

I couldn't agree more.

There is something rather wonderful about wearing a little silver version of your dog while they're still snoring on the sofa, demanding dinner, going for walks and generally being part of your everyday life.

And now Jennie has a pair of little silver and rose gold Woodys to celebrate that very special connection while she still can.
