Peanut: An American Rescue Dog Campaigner
Some commissions feel close to home straight away.
When Kristen got in touch, I already felt a connection. She spends her time campaigning and fundraising to support rescue dogs in the USA, and as someone who has always had rescue dogs myself, that meant a lot to me.
Her request was to create a necklace of her own rescue dog, Peanut.
Peanut, it turns out, is made up of 12 different breeds. I love that. A perfect reminder that the most special dogs are often the ones you cannot quite define. From the photos Kristen sent, he looked like the sweetest little dog, full of character and charm.
The image we chose to work from was one of Peanut wearing a tiny bowtie.
Now, you might think the hardest part of making a custom dog necklace is capturing the expression, or the proportions, or the fur texture. But in this case, it was something much smaller.
That little bowtie.
Recreating it in silver, at such a tiny scale, so that it still looked soft and recognisable, took far longer than I expected. It had to sit just right. Not too bulky, not too flat, and still clearly a bowtie. It became one of those details I kept coming back to, refining again and again until it felt right.
Because with pieces like this, it is often the smallest details that carry the most personality.
I created Peanut in sterling silver, shaping his little face and adding texture so he felt full of life. And then finally, that bowtie sat perfectly in place, finishing the piece.
When the necklace arrived, Kristen’s message made me smile:
“I received the necklace and it’s utterly perfect!!! You captured Peanut beautifully. It’s so precious and something I will absolutely treasure. I can’t wait to wear it tomorrow.”
There is something very special about knowing a piece will be worn straight away, not saved for best, not tucked away, but part of everyday life.
Peanut is clearly one very loved little dog, and I feel incredibly lucky to have played a small part in celebrating him.
If you would like your own rescue dog, or any much loved companion, captured in silver, I would love to see your photographs.
