Haggis: A Tibetan Terrier Brooch for Ailsa's Mum’s Birthday
When Ailsa contacted me, she wanted to create a really special birthday present for her mum.
She sent me photos of her mum’s Tibetan Terrier, Haggis, and asked if I could make a brooch of him. She already had one of my sheep brooches and loved it, so she knew she wanted something similar for her mum, but this time it needed to be unmistakably Haggis.
I worked from the photographs to capture his shape and character in silver, adding 22 carat gold to bring some warmth and detail to the piece.
I also added a silver safety fastening to the back to keep the brooch secure. When you're making something that is going to be treasured and worn, I like knowing that it is safely fastened and ready to be enjoyed.
Then Haggis was ready to go, carefully packaged up and sent off in time for Mum’s birthday.
“Mum absolutely loves it!”
I love hearing what happens when someone opens one of my pieces, and Ilsa sent me a lovely message afterwards. Her mum had sent her a photo when she opened her present on her birthday.
She absolutely loved it.
I think there is something particularly lovely about giving someone a piece of jewellery featuring their own dog. It isn't just a pretty brooch. It is a little portrait of a dog who is part of their everyday life and their family.
And because Haggis was made especially for his mum, it was completely unique to her.
Knowing that she loved him as soon as she opened the box is the best possible ending to a commission like this.
I hope she wears Haggis for many years to come, and that every time she puts him on, he brings a little smile to her face
If you would like to have your own dog recreated in silver, even from older photographs, I would love to see them. You can read more about my process here: Custom Pet Jewellery.
Who knows? Your precious friend might just be the next one I’m smiling about at my workbench.
