French Bulldog Pin for A Man
One thing I've noticed over the years is that most of my commissions are ordered by women, for women.
So it made a lovely change when I was asked to create a piece of jewellery for a man.
His wife had secretly commissioned a tie pin featuring their much-loved little French Bulldog. I thought it was such a thoughtful idea. Jewellery isn't just for women, and I love making pieces that people can wear every day, whatever their style.
The little Frenchie was a beautiful brindle, which is always an interesting colouring to recreate in precious metals. I built the pin from sterling silver, before carefully using oxidised silver and 22ct gold plating to reflect the warm brindle markings in his coat.
One of the things I enjoy most about making custom jewellery is working out how to recreate colour without using paint or enamel. Layering different precious metal finishes allows me to suggest the pattern of a dog's coat while still keeping the piece unmistakably handcrafted.
The finished pin was wonderfully understated. Small enough to wear on a jacket lapel or tie, but detailed enough that anyone who knew the little French Bulldog would recognise him immediately.
I have to admit, I rather enjoyed making something a little different.
It reminded me that custom pet jewellery doesn't always have to be a necklace or bracelet. Sometimes the most meaningful pieces are the ones designed around the person who will wear them.
Whether that's a pendant, a brooch... or in this case, a tiny tie pin carrying a much-loved little brindle French Bulldog everywhere his owner goes.
