Molly: A Special Cat Necklace for Hilary's Mum
When Hilary first got in touch, she was looking for something really special for her mum's birthday.
Her mum had a much-loved cat called Molly, and Hilary wanted to give her a gift that was completely personal. Something that wasn't simply a piece of jewellery, but something that reminded her of the little companion she loved.
So I set about creating Molly as a bespoke necklace.
Molly was a beautiful black and white cat, which made silver and oxidised silver the perfect combination. I used bright silver to bring out the lighter areas of her face and body, then added oxidised silver to create the darker markings and give the piece plenty of depth and contrast.
As always, it was the little details that mattered most. When I'm making a pet portrait, I'm not trying to create a generic version of the animal. I'm trying to capture the particular face that their owner knows and loves.
Hilary had originally been considering necklaces for both her mum and a friend, but decided to go ahead with Molly first. I loved knowing that this little necklace was going to be a birthday surprise, made especially for her mum.

There is something incredibly satisfying about receiving a message like that. I can spend hours studying photographs, shaping tiny pieces of silver and adding all those individual markings, but ultimately the only thing that matters is whether the person who knows the pet best looks at it and sees their Molly.
A little black and white cat, recreated in silver and oxidised silver, ready to be kept close and treasured for years to come.
