Remembering Lindsay's Boxer Boy
When Lindsay contacted me, she had only just lost her beloved Boxer boy.
She told me she would love to have a custom piece made to remember him, and I replied to let her know I would be very happy to take on the commission.
Lindsay came back with such a lovely message:
“Thank you so much for your kind response. A necklace sounds like me, and I would totally entrust you to capture my boy at his best. I am truly devastated at his loss and would love you to take this on.”
I think that phrase, “capture my boy at his best”, says so much about what these pieces mean.
When someone has lost a dog only days before, everything is still incredibly raw. There are photographs, memories and all those little things that suddenly feel even more precious.
I wanted to create something that would give Lindsay a way to keep her boy close, while capturing him as she remembered him.
I made his necklace in sterling silver and rose gold, using the different finishes to bring his colouring and details to life.
There is something quite humbling about being trusted with a commission so soon after a loss. I never met Lindsay's Boxer, but through the photographs and the details she shared, I got a little glimpse of the dog who had meant so much to her.
Once the necklace was finished, I carefully packaged it up and sent it on its way.
“Thank you so so much for my necklace. I love it. xx”
Then I received Lindsay's message:
“Hi Avril, thank you so so much for my necklace. I love it. XX.”
It was a short message, but I could feel how much it meant.
These are the commissions that remind me why I love what I do. I'm not just making a piece of jewellery. I'm taking someone's photographs and memories and trying to turn them into something they can hold onto.
A little silver and rose gold reminder of a much-loved Boxer boy, now kept close to Lindsay's heart
