Violet: The Detail That Made All the Difference
I love it when I spot a tiny detail in a dog that might easily be overlooked, because sometimes those little things are what make a custom piece feel completely personal.
This time, I was making a necklace for Violet, a beautiful black and tan Dachshund.
At first glance, you might think a Dachshund is a fairly straightforward dog to recreate. Long body, little legs, long nose. But when I was studying Violet’s photographs, I noticed something that made her a little different.
She wasn’t completely smooth like many Dachshunds. Violet had a slightly wiry coat, particularly around her muzzle. It was a tiny detail, but I knew I had to include it.
When I’m making a custom piece, I’m always looking for those little characteristics that make one dog different from another. It might be the way they sit, the shape of their ears, a particular marking or, in Violet’s case, those slightly wiry little hairs around her muzzle.
So I made her necklace from oxidised silver and rose gold, using the different finishes to capture her colouring and add depth to her little face.
And I made sure that wiry texture around her muzzle was there too.
It might seem like such a small thing, but it made all the difference to the finished piece.
That’s what I love about custom jewellery. The aim isn’t simply to make a Dachshund. It’s to make Violet. Her shape, her colouring and those tiny details that someone who knows and loves her would recognise immediately.
And I think those are often the details that make a piece of custom jewellery so special. Because when you look at it, you don’t just see a little silver and rose gold dog.
You see your dog.
If you would like to have your own dog recreated in silver, even from older photographs, I would love to see them. You can read more about my process here: Custom Pet Jewellery.
Who knows? Your precious friend might just be the next one I’m smiling about at my workbench.
