Anne's Basset Hound Earrings
Every commission brings something special to my workbench, but I have to say, when Anne from Texas got in touch about her basset hounds, I knew I was in for a treat.
Anne sent me a wonderful collection of photos of her dogs, and I quickly realised that “a few” bassets actually meant lots of bassets! Long ears, soulful eyes, and those gloriously droopy expressions, I couldn’t wait to get started.
She wanted a pair of earrings that captured the spirit of her beloved hounds, but she wasn’t overly specific about the design. In fact, she gave me something that’s both exciting and mildly terrifying for a jeweller: complete creative freedom. Her only request was that there be plenty of rose gold, since she mostly wears gold jewellery.
Now, I’ll admit, that part made me a little nervous, there’s always that moment of “What if my version of ‘lots of rose gold’ isn’t quite hers?” But I took a deep breath, trusted my instincts, and got to work.
I designed a pair of delicate basset hound stud earrings, crafted in sterling silver and richly plated with rose gold to give them warmth and a lovely contrast against the silver detailing. I wanted them to have personality, that unmistakable basset expression that says, “I may be slow, but I know exactly what I’m doing.”
To finish them off, I fitted each with locking earring posts for extra security. I’ve learned that when people adore their jewellery, the last thing they want is to lose it, especially when it represents their beloved pets.
When the earrings were ready, I packaged them carefully and sent them on their long journey to Texas. And then, that little moment of anticipation began, waiting to hear if Anne loved them as much as I hoped she would.
I didn’t have to wait long. Soon her message popped into my inbox, and it absolutely made my week:
“My basset earrings just arrived and I ADORE them! Exactly what I envisioned from you! I have them on and cannot wait to wear them to church in the morning.
Thank you also for the locking earring posts. Very clever and a bit of added security for my beauties is a good thing…
