Kaline-Sophie: Ditte's Much-Loved Girl
This is Kaline-Sophie. A dog so loved that, even years later, the sight of her face still brings tears.
Ditte got in touch to ask if I could make a necklace in tribute to Kaline-Sophie, one of the special dogs who has stayed in her heart long after saying goodbye. Over the years, Ditte has asked me to make jewellery not only for herself, but also for friends, slowly building a collection that honours each of the dogs who have shaped her life.
And now, it was Kaline-Sophie’s turn. The moment I saw her photographs, I knew exactly what had to be captured first, those wonderfully distinctive long eyebrows. They gave her such personality and expression, the kind of feature that instantly makes a dog recognisable to the people who love them.
So I carefully sculpted Kaline-Sophie in sterling silver, layering texture and detail into the piece by hand to recreate her soft coat, expressive face and those unmistakable brows. With memorial jewellery especially, it is never about creating a perfect photograph in metal.
It is about capturing them. The feeling people get when they look at the piece and instantly say, “That’s her.”
“Dear Avril, Today my Kaline-Sophie arrived in the mail. I was crying when I opened the box. I am so overwhelmed, she looks just like her and you captured her personality perfectly. I cannot thank you enough for this precious piece of jewelry. You outdid yourself if that is even possible.”
When Kaline-Sophie’s necklace arrived, Ditte sent me this message:
“Dear Avril,
Today my Kaline-Sophie arrived in the mail. I was crying when I opened the box. I am so overwhelmed, she looks just like her and you captured her personality perfectly.
I cannot thank you enough for this precious piece of jewelry. You outdid yourself if that is even possible.”
Messages like this are the reason I do what I do. Because these pieces are not just necklaces. They are memories people can hold onto. Tiny reminders of the dogs who walked beside them through different chapters of life, and who somehow never really leave.
And now Kaline-Sophie is there again, close to Ditte’s heart, exactly where she belongs.
