The Bracelet That Made Hannah Cry
A few months ago, I had the absolute pleasure of creating a very special bracelet for a customer called Kate. She wanted something unique for her daughter Hannah’s birthday — a piece of jewellery that would celebrate two very important family members: her pet rabbits, Miffy and Timothy.
Now, if you’ve read any of my other custom jewellery stories, you’ll know one thing about me: I am not an artist. My sketches are… well… let’s just say they would make a toddler proud. Thankfully, my customers are wonderfully trusting souls and take a leap of faith when they see my scribbles. By the time I swap pencil for silver, the magic happens.
For Hannah’s bracelet, I cut Miffy and Timothy out of a lovely chunky piece of sterling silver. I had to make sure it was thick enough that their little ears could survive daily wear (because nobody wants floppy silver bunnies!). As I was working, I thought: Wouldn’t it be sweet to add their fluffy tails to the back as an extra hidden detail?
Well, that’s when I got a surprise. Kate explained that poor Timothy has no tail at all (no one knows why – he’s a rescue). So, one little tail, one “no-tail,” and some more careful customisation later, the bracelet was complete.
Kate kindly wrote back:
“Sorry it has taken so long to message you to say a huge thank you for the bracelet. It is amazing and you have managed to capture the likeness and difference in the rabbits perfectly. I don’t know how you did that in silver?! Yesterday was my daughter Hannah’s birthday and I cannot tell you how much she adored the beautiful bracelet, examining every detail of the faces of the rabbits and comparing it to the actual rabbits. The detail including Timmy’s missing tail on the back of the bracelet was the final straw and caused a few tears in her eyes! Her husband also thought it beautiful. It was the perfect gift, thank you. You are very talented.”
Honestly, hearing this made my heart so full. To think that hours of saw blades, silver dust, and me muttering under my breath in the workshop could lead to happy tears at a birthday party… well, that’s why I do what I do.
If you’ve ever thought about having a piece of jewellery made to capture your pet’s quirks (tails or no tails!), I’d love to hear from you. You can read more about my process here: Custom Pet Jewellery.
I only take on a limited number of custom orders, so if you’ve got an idea, please send me an email with some photos of your animal and, if you are feeling creative, your sketches. (Not essential and don’t worry about the art…If you’ve seen my drawings, you’ll know there’s no judgement here!)
Who knows? Your beloved pet could be the next star of my workbench.
