Annabel Didn't Want a Piece of Jewellery: So I Made a Silver Ornament!

Most of the time, when people contact me about custom work, it’s because they’d like a special piece of jewellery to wear and treasure. But every so often, a request arrives that takes me in a slightly different direction, and I absolutely love the challenge.

That’s exactly what happened when Annabel got in touch. She didn’t want a necklace or a brooch, but instead asked me if I could create something a little different: a silver ornament of her beloved lurcher dog.

Now, I have a soft spot for lurchers, elegant, gentle, and often full of quirky charm, so I jumped at the chance. Her dog had very distinctive dark grey markings across its head, and I knew right away this would be the detail that really brought the piece to life.

The ornament itself was designed to be about 5cm high, small enough to sit beautifully on a shelf or desk, but large enough to carry real presence. I worked in solid sterling silver, cutting and shaping carefully before adding oxidisation to bring out the lurcher’s markings. Slowly but surely, Annabel’s graceful dog began to emerge from the silver.

Unlike jewellery, which has to balance beauty with wearability, an ornament allows for a little more freedom. There was something very special about creating a piece that didn’t need clasps, chains, or pins — it could simply exist as a little sculpture in its own right, to be admired every day.

When it was finished, I polished it until it gleamed, the grey markings standing out proudly against the silver body. Holding it in my hand, it struck me just how personal and unique this commission was. At only 5cm tall, it was small, but it carried a wonderful presence, a tiny tribute to a much-loved companion.

Annabel didn’t leave me a review afterwards, but for me, the joy was in the making. I loved knowing that she now has a piece she can display proudly in her home. A forever ornament of her lurcher, captured in silver, with those unmistakable dark grey markings shining through.

This commission reminded me that while jewellery is a beautiful way to carry our pets with us, ornaments are a lovely alternative. Sometimes it’s nice to have something you can keep on display, always there to glance at, smile at, and be reminded of the bond you share.

If you’ve ever thought about having your pet immortalised in silver, whether as jewellery or as a keepsake ornament — I’d love to help. You can see more about my custom work here: Custom Pet Jewellery.
