Paddy: Cufflinks That Look Like This Stunning Rhodesian Ridgeback
Some commissions are about remembering a dog. Others are about making sure a much-loved dog is never forgotten.
When Kathy contacted me, she wanted to commission a pair of cufflinks featuring Paddy, her son’s beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback. Paddy was very much alive and well, but Kathy knew something every dog owner eventually learns. No matter how much we wish otherwise, we never get to keep them forever.
In her email, she described Paddy in a way that instantly helped me understand the dog I was trying to capture. “When I think of Paddy, the word majestic comes to mind.”
Because Rhodesian Ridgebacks really do have a remarkable presence. They can be complete softies at home, but with a slight change in posture they suddenly look every inch the noble, athletic breed they were born to be.
With dogs, it is often the smallest details that make the biggest difference. The shape of an ear, the angle of a head, the way they hold themselves. Get those right and the whole piece comes to life.
I created Paddy in sterling silver, adding touches of rose gold to bring warmth and contrast to the design. Because these were cufflinks rather than a necklace, I needed to simplify certain details while still retaining everything that made Paddy recognisable.
Most importantly, I wanted to capture that sense of quiet confidence Kathy had described. Not just a likeness of Paddy, but something of his character too.
As I worked on the pair, I found myself thinking about Kathy's reason for commissioning them. Earlier that year, Paddy had experienced a serious illness. Thankfully he had recovered, but it had reminded the family how precious time with our dogs really is.
Kathy explained: “He is 7 now which is certainly middle aged in dog years and I am aware that my son won’t have him forever but I want him to have a permanent memento of the dog that we all love so much.”
I think that is something many dog owners will understand. We know our time with them is limited. We just prefer not to think about it until we have to. Pieces like these allow us to celebrate them now, while they are still very much part of everyday life.
The finished cufflinks became a tribute not to loss, but to love. A way for Kathy's son to carry a little reminder of Paddy with him, whether at work, a wedding, or any special occasion in the years ahead.
And hopefully, every time he fastens them to his shirt cuffs, he will be reminded of a majestic Ridgeback called Paddy, who was loved beyond measure.
