Custom Silver Bichon Frise Memorial Brooch: Gizmo
In July this year, Jack got in touch because he wanted to commission something really special for his girlfriend. It was to mark the first anniversary of the passing of their much-loved Bichon Frise, Gizmo.
He had a lovely idea. Rather than making a traditional necklace or brooch, he wanted something that could be worn in either way. So I made a silver brooch with a special hoop attachment, allowing it to be changed into a necklace whenever she fancied wearing it differently.
I love a commission with a little extra thought behind it, and this one was particularly lovely because it gave her two ways to wear a reminder of Gizmo.
Gizmo's wonderfully fluffy Bichon coat was perfect for recreating in silver. Bichons have such distinctive curls, and I didn't want to simply make a smooth silver shape and call it a day. Those curls are such an important part of what makes a Bichon look like a Bichon!
In fact, I made a special engraving tool specifically for this piece, so I could create the little individual curls and texture of Gizmo's coat. It took a bit of experimenting, but it was worth it to get that lovely fluffy appearance.
I used sterling silver for the brooch and oxidised the nose and eyes to give his face definition. It's often those tiny dark details that bring a silver animal portrait to life. Without them, you can lose so much of the expression.
I really enjoyed working on Gizmo. His coat gave me the opportunity to play with the texture of the silver, and I think the finished piece captures that lovely distinctive Bichon look.
Anniversaries can be difficult, particularly the first one. A year might have passed, but that doesn't mean the missing becomes any easier. Having something made especially for Gizmo gave Jack a thoughtful way to mark the occasion and give his girlfriend something she could wear close to her.
And I particularly liked the idea that she could choose how to wear him, pinned to a jacket as a brooch or hanging from a chain as a necklace.
A year on, Gizmo may no longer be there to greet them, but he clearly remains a very important part of their story.
