Benji: Jane's Jack Russell Friend
Some dogs have features that define them instantly. For Benji, it was his ears.
Jane got in touch with me after losing her much loved Jack Russell, Benji. As anyone who has loved a terrier will know, they are small in size but enormous in presence. And from the photographs Jane sent, Benji had that classic, alert Jack Russell expression, topped with beautifully upright, pointed ears.
Those ears were everything.
When you are recreating a dog in miniature, especially as stud earrings, you have to choose what matters most. The piece needs to be small enough to wear comfortably, but detailed enough to be unmistakable. For Benji, I knew straight away that his ears had to be right. If they were wrong, it would not be him.
I created the earrings in sterling silver, shaping his little head carefully so the proportions felt true. Then I added rose gold plating to bring warmth into the design and give subtle depth to his features. The contrast between the silver and rose gold helped highlight his expression and lift the detail.
But it was those upright ears that I spent the most time on. They had to stand proud and pointed, just like in the photographs. They gave him that alert, curious look that terrier owners know so well. Slightly mischievous. Slightly stubborn. Completely loveable.
Stud earrings present a unique challenge because they are viewed up close. Every line and curve matters. I engraved and refined the detail until I felt that familiar moment when the metal stops looking like metal and starts looking like a dog.
When they were finished, Benji’s little face looked back at me from the bench, ears tall and confident.
There is something very special about memorial earrings. A necklace sits close to the heart, but earrings frame the face. They are seen in conversation, in laughter, in everyday life. Jane will carry Benji with her not just privately, but proudly.
Even though Benji is no longer here, his unmistakable ears will still stand tall in silver and rose gold.
