Berlioz: A Big Softie Loved by Ditte
There is something very special about a customer who comes back again and again.
Over the years, Ditte has trusted me to recreate many of her dogs in silver and gold. She always gives me complete freedom, which is both a privilege and a responsibility I never take lightly. When someone places that level of trust in you, you want to get it exactly right.
This time, the piece was for her beautiful boy Berlioz.
Ditte sent me a parcel of old photographs to work from. I always love receiving photos in the post. There is something about holding them in your hands, seeing the little creases and worn edges, that makes the dog feel even more real.
Berlioz was a Newfoundland and Labrador cross, a big, gentle dog with long elegant legs and the softest expression. He was black, with distinctive white markings on his chest, and I knew those markings would be key to bringing him to life in silver.
I created him using layers of sterling silver, building up his form and then using oxidisation to bring depth and contrast into his coat. The darker tones helped reflect his rich black fur, while the lighter areas allowed those white chest markings to stand out clearly.
As I worked, I kept coming back to his expression. Ditte had described him so beautifully. Not just how he looked, but who he was.
“My goofy, loving Labrador/Newfoundland mix boy who had the 100 percent Newfie nature. He was my protector and loved kissing and hugging me. He was a real teddy bear.”
That stayed with me.
Because it is never just about getting the markings right. It is about capturing that feeling. That softness. That quiet presence.
When the necklace was finished, Berlioz had that gentle, steady look. The kind of dog who would lean into you and stay there.

Ditte wrote to me as soon as she received him:

That last line made me smile.
Because that is exactly it. These pieces are not just worn. They are held, touched, kissed. They become part of everyday life.
Berlioz may have been lost suddenly and far too soon, but he is still there with Ditte now. Close to her, exactly where he belongs.
