Buxton: Tiny Dog, Timeless cufflinks
Every so often I am asked to make something that is not a necklace, earrings or a brooch, and I always enjoy those slightly different commissions.
This one was a pair of silver and 22ct gold cufflinks inspired by a tiny, wonderfully fluffy dog called Buxton.
Buxton’s owner got in touch because she wanted to surprise her husband with something truly personal. Not a novelty gift, not something generic, but something meaningful. A piece he could wear on special occasions and quietly carry Buxton with him.
I love the idea of cufflinks for that reason. They are subtle and understated. Often only noticed by the person wearing them or someone standing close enough to see the detail. They feel intimate and thoughtful.
From the photographs I was sent, Buxton was a small bundle of fluff with bright eyes and the sweetest little pink nose. His coat looked almost impossible to recreate in metal, but that is exactly the sort of challenge I enjoy.
I began by shaping Buxton’s outline in sterling silver, keeping the scale proportionate so the cufflinks would feel refined rather than bulky. Then came the texture. I engraved fine lines into the silver to reflect his soft, fluffy coat, building depth and movement so he did not look flat or lifeless.
To elevate the piece and give it warmth, I incorporated 22ct gold plating into parts of his coat so it would catch the light beautifully. And for that tiny pink nose, I added a delicate touch of rose gold. It was only a small detail, but it brought him to life. Sometimes it is the smallest features that make a piece instantly recognisable.
Cufflinks also have to be practical. They need to sit properly, fasten securely and feel balanced on the cuff. So just as much care went into the mechanics as into Buxton’s expression.
When they were finished, I remember holding them in my hand and smiling. There is something very special about transforming a tiny fluffy dog into something polished and elegant that can be worn with a crisp shirt and suit.
I like to imagine Buxton’s dad opening that box and realising that the little dog who fills their home with personality has been captured in silver and gold, right down to his pink nose.
Most of the jewellery I make is worn close to the heart. These cufflinks were different. They were about quiet pride. A small, beautiful reminder of Buxton, worn on the sleeve.
