Gilbey & Owen: Canadian Schnodles

Some commissions begin with a very clear idea. Others evolve as the story unfolds.

When Lisa from Canada first contacted me, she had a lovely concept in mind. She wondered if I could make a pendant similar to one on my website, showing the backs of two dogs sitting side by side, with a little heart between them. The difference was that these dogs were her beloved schnoodles, Gilbey and Owen, who had both crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

The idea of two dogs sitting together, seen from behind, can be very moving. It suggests companionship and quiet loyalty. But when Lisa sent me a photograph of her boys, something immediately struck me.

They had the most beautiful, expressive faces.

It felt like such a shame to hide that.

I gently suggested an alternative. Instead of seeing the backs of the dogs, what if we made them facing forward inside a circular frame? That way their little expressions and personalities could really shine through.

Lisa was understandably cautious at first. She explained that she is a Pilates teacher, and necklaces are not something she normally wears. With all the equipment and the movement involved in her work, jewellery can easily get caught or swing into the face when upside down.

So this necklace would be something very personal. Something she would mostly wear tucked safely under her clothing, close to her heart.

We talked through the practical details. Lisa needed a chain that could slip easily over her head, with no clasp to worry about, and a length that would sit comfortably under her clothing. In the end we settled on a 26 inch chain with no clasp, a perfect compromise between practicality and comfort.

Once we agreed on the design, I began creating Gilbey and Owen in silver.

Their little faces were full of character. Schnoodles have that lovely mix of softness and intelligence, and I worked carefully to capture the shape of their muzzles, their eyes, and the gentle texture of their coats. Placing them within a circular frame helped bring the composition together so they felt balanced and connected, just like they must have been in life.

As always, there is a moment when a piece stops feeling like metal and starts feeling like the dog itself. That moment is why I love making these commissions so much.

When the necklace finally made the long journey across the Atlantic to Canada, Lisa wrote:

“Hi Avril,
Thank you so much for my Gilbey 🌈 and Owen 🌈 necklace. I love it.”

Simple words, but they meant everything.

I like to imagine Lisa slipping the necklace over her head before a busy day, tucking it safely under her clothing while she teaches. Hidden from view perhaps, but always there. Two little faces close to her heart, exactly where they belong.
