Earrings Based On One Slightly Blurred Dog Photo
When Deborah, a professor from Nashville, got in touch, she had a very special request.
She wanted me to create a keepsake for a friend, using a photograph of her beloved dog, Henri. There was just one little problem. Deborah only had one photograph of Henri.
Usually, when I make a custom piece, I love having several photographs to work from. Different angles can reveal all those tiny details that make a dog unmistakably themselves. But thankfully, the one photograph Deborah had was quite a good one, and most importantly, it showed Henri’s wonderful, distinctive ears. And those ears were going to be key.
Deborah was initially thinking about a drop earring design and asked for my thoughts on whether that would work. I loved the idea. Henri’s face and those lovely ears lent themselves perfectly to a pair of earrings, so that became the plan.
Working from that single photograph, I recreated Henri’s head in silver, carefully shaping the features and making sure those ears were just right. With only one image to work from, there was no room for guesswork. I had to really study the photograph and look at what made Henri, Henri.
I think that's one of the most rewarding parts of making custom pet jewellery. It isn't simply about making a little silver version of a dog. It's about finding those tiny details that someone who loved them would recognise instantly.
And in Henri’s case, it was definitely those ears. A pair of earrings is such a lovely way to carry a little reminder of a much-loved dog, especially when the jewellery has been made as a gift for someone special.
And I’m still rather amazed that one photograph was enough to bring Henri to life in silver.
