Pickle: The Cutest Little Pup!
Some dogs have markings that make them completely unforgettable.
When Ian got in touch about his dog Pickle, I could see straight away what made him so special. Pickle was a Parsons Jack Russell, mostly white, but with that wonderfully distinctive black patch across his face. The kind of marking that defines the dog instantly.
You could not mistake him for anyone else.
The necklace was to be a gift for Ian’s wife, and from the photographs he sent, Pickle had that cheeky, bright expression that terriers do so well. Alert, curious and just a little bit mischievous.
Those are always the dogs I enjoy recreating most.
I made Pickle in sterling silver, carefully shaping his little body and building up the texture of his coat through engraving. With a dog like Pickle, it is not about lots of colour, but about getting the contrast right. The balance between light and dark.
That black patch had to sit exactly where it belonged.
Too much and it would overpower his face. Too little and it would not feel like him. It is always a careful process of building up layers and stepping back, again and again, until it feels right.
Because when it is right, you know straight away.
When the necklace was finished, Pickle had that same bright, cheeky look that had come through in the photographs. Full of personality, even in silver.
“Just wanted to say many thanks for our Pickle necklace. My wife is delighted with it. It’s absolutely beautiful. You captured his cheeky character perfectly. We love the details, from the little spots on his ear to the colouring of fur. We’ll really treasure it and it will make both of us smile every time Katharine wears it.”
Ian’s message when it arrived said everything I needed to hear:

Not just to capture how a dog looks, but how they make you feel. That little lift every time you see them.
Pickle is now there every day, close to Katharine, still making them both smile.
